Done poorly, breaking bad news can lead to negative consequences for patients, families, and physicians, taking an emotional and psychological toll on all parties involved. Done well, it can further the goal of understanding patient expectations & involving the patient in treatment planning, cementing the therapeutic alliance at a pivotal time in the patient's life. |
